Women's film fest hits Seoul

The 9th Women's Film Festival will be held at Artreon in Shinchon, western Seoul, April 5-12, featuring about 100 films from 29 countries in seven categories, and put the emphasis on the female point of view.

The country's sole film festival dedicated to women's cultural perspective will open with "Antonia", a Brazilian feature directed by Tata Amaral. "Antonia" revolves around the friendship of four girls living in the suburbs of Sao Paulo. Veteran director Amaral will also participate in a festival event to share her thoughts with Korean audiences.

The festival's theme this year is "See the world through women's eyes!" and organizers expect audiences to appreciate the lives of women around the world as depicted in these high-quality films.

Lee Hyae-kyoung, festival director of WFFIS, said, "In the 21st century, women's status has made much headway and the social perception about women's roles has also improved, but we still have many issues and problems concerning today's women".

Lee also noted Korean female filmmakers produced only a small number of films last year. "After some studies, we will prepare a forum on the role of Korean filmmakers here next year", she said.

The film festival's special section features Hungarian director Marta Meszaros, who helped cultivate the women-oriented films in the 1960s. Five of Meszaros's representative films are to be screened: "Diary for My Loves", "Diary for My Children", "The Two of Them", "Adoption", and "Fetus".

In the New Currents section, the main section of the festival, French director Alante Kavaite's mystery "Fissures" and Canadian director Megan Martin's comedy "Ninth Street Chronicles" warrant attention.

Magaly Richard-Serrano, a director from France, handles particular mother-daughter relationships in "One the Ropes", in which a daughter attempts to discover the cause of her mother's death.

A Korean documentary titled "We Are Railway Crew of KTX" is expected to arrest the attention of local audiences. The documentary deals with the ongoing controversy surrounding female workers who lost their jobs at the country's high-speed train operator.

In a section titled, "Women Migrants: Invisible People", seven documentaries from 10 countries highlighting the challenges facing migrant women will be explored. The films include Lee Min-sook's "Borderless", Dima Al-Joundi's "Maid for Sale", Hsu Ying-hui's "Ah-Tsao Go!" and Anayansi Prado's "Maid in America".

Other sections of the festival are "Youth Program: Girls on Film", "Empire and Women", "Queer Rainbow", "Asian Short Film & Video Competition", and "Special Screening: The 5th Documentary Ock Rang Award".

One of the main events is "A Night for Asian Women in Film", a venue where leading female filmmakers and staff meet together and exchange ideas. The event is set to be held at Artreon's Gallery at 8 p.m. on April 10.
