Venice chose KIM Ki-duk after all. At the closing ceremony of 69th Venice Film Festival held at 7 pm on September 8th (CET), KIM’s Pieta won the Golden Lion. The Master, directed by Paul Thomas ANDERSON, was the strongest competitor till the last moment, but it won the Silver Lion and the Best Actor’s Award.

KIM’s accomplishment was kind of predicted in advance. At this year’s edition of the Venice Film Festival, he swept 4 prizes including unofficial ones; Premio Agiscuola Leoncino D’Oro (Young Critic’s Award), Mouse D’Oro and Premio P. Nazareno Taddei. Mouse D’Oro is a prize given to one of the films invited to the official competition section, and the winner is selected by 72 journalists of online film media in Italy. This is known to reflect opinions at the site most instantly. Premio P. Nazareno Taddei. Mouse D’Oro was first introduced in 2007 to pay tribute to Nazareno Taddei, a renowned Italian writer who passed away in 2006.

KIM’s connection to the festival started in 2000. At that time, he went there with The Isle and once again with Address Unknown in the following year. It was 2004 when 3-Iron brought him the Silver Lion, which the first prize he won at the Venice Film Festival. This year’s  is the first prize he has won at one of the world’s 3 major film festivals (Cannes, Berlin and Venice) in 8 years since he won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival with 3-Iron and the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival with Samaritan Girl both in 2004. KIM’s achievement is very meaningful especially because he became the very first Korean director to win the highest award at one of the 3 major film festivals.

At the awards presentation of the Venice Film Festival’s closing ceremony held at 8 pm on September 8th (CET), KIM expressed his impressions saying, “I appreciate the entire staff and all the actors.” Then he sang ‘Arirang’, a Korean traditional folk song. After the closing ceremony ended, KIM with CHO Min-su, the leading actress, stated their impressions to Korean fans.
